TSO + FANEXPO = POP CULTURE SCIENCE @ MEGACON!

The Science Of… and FanExpo are teaming up again this year to bring great pop culture x science programming to FanExpo’s shows across the country!

Things kick off this weekend at MegaCon: Orlando. Coming for all four days or just one? We’ve got your favorite blend of real science and pop culture ready to go! Along with TSO’s Matt and Shari Brady, panels will feature experts from a diverse collection of science and research disciplines that will let their inner geek out as they talk about the real science of your favorite pop culture, as well as answering all the questions you’ve always wanted to ask!

Could a planet like Tatooine exist with two suns? Who does evolution better, Pokemon or the X-Men? How real are the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, and what’s changed in what we know about dinosaurs since the first move? For our educators – how can you use pop culture in your STEM classroom? Is the new technology in Star Trek science or just flat-out magic at this point? Where’s my clone army?

And of course – multiverses. What’s the deal?

Along with tons of pop culture x science programming, we’re thrilled to announce that The Science Of… will meet you on the con floor! We’ll be in booth #1175 in the Community Zone, surrounded by our geeky pals – robots, makers, cosplayers, and ghostbusters!

We’ll be doing quick science demonstrations all weekend long, and you’ll be able to meet up with our panelists for more questions and answers, along with maybe even catching a glimpse of a velociraptor skull!

If you hit our panels last year, you know what we’re about – a fun time with lots of laughs, unexpected science facts, and a fun space where everyone’s geek comes out, there will definitely not be a test, and there are absolutely no stupid questions. It’s a fun way to feed your fandom while learning!

We’d love to see you – be sure to come up and say hi!

Here’s what’s going on:

THURSDAY, MAY 19th

FASCINATING: THE (NEW) SCIENCE OF STAR TREK
5:00 pm in S320E THEATER 8 GEEK FEST/ SCI-FI

Every old tech is new again. The original Star Trek imagined technology for the coming decades. Now, with the new Star Trek series coming out, the technology has to leap ahead. It’s not just communicators and phasers anymore. We’ll look at the real science of the new tech along with guessing at when we’ll see some of the new and amazing inventions and devices to show up.

TOURING TATOOINE
6:00 pm in S320G THEATER 9 FAN PANELS

How can a planet be so much…desert? Let’s take a look at Tatooine – double suns, moisture farms, robust ecosystems and all. Could something like what we see in Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian exist in our universe? We’ll bring the planetary scientists, you bring the questions!

FRIDAY, MAY 20th

HEY EDUCATORS! POP CULTURE + STEM EDUCATION!
12:00 pm in S310C MULTI-GENRE WORKSHOPS

Teach STEM with pop culture? You better believe it! As a strategy for engagement, participation, and students taking ownership of content, it can’t be beat. Come hear from teachers who use it in their classrooms and can help you move it into yours as well!

POKEMON VS. X-MEN: EVOLVE BETTER!
4:30 pm in S220E FAMILY ZONE

Two massive fandoms, and they’re both based on evolution. Who does it better? Is it even evolution? Join us as we bring science experts and fans together to break down the evolutions between the two and see what works, what doesn’t, and what’s just super-cool anyway.

SATURDAY, MAY 21st

IT’S A BIRD, IT’S A PLANE, IT’S HYBRID SUPERMAN!
1:45 pm in S320G THEATER 9 FAN PANELS

Jon Kent – Superman is his dad, Lois Lane is his mom. He’s half-human, half Kryptonian, and from what we’ve seen, better than both. How? It’s real biology – sometimes the offspring are greater than the parents. It’s not comic book science – it’s real.

JURASSIC PARK: 30 YEARS OF BIG SCREEN DINOSAURS!
3:00 pm in S220E FAMILY ZONE

Since the reveal of the first velociraptor to the promise of Giganotosaurus in Dominion, we’ve seen tons of dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park movies! But what have we learned about dinosaurs during that time? Which ones are real? And just how easy would it be to make your own dinosaur? Join us to talk dinosaurs, real and otherwise with experts and fans!

SUNDAY, MAY 22nd

LET’S TALK MULTIVERSES!
2:30 pm in S320E THEATER 8 GEEK FEST/ SCI-FI

Dr. Strange. What If? Rick and Morty. Flashpoint. These days everyone knows how fun and weird the multiverse is. But trust us, the science is so much weirder and cooler. Let’s dig into how it works, and how a cat that’s both dead and alive figures into it. Come with your multiversal questions!

SO, YOU WANT TO MAKE YOUR OWN CLONE…
3:30 pm in S320E THEATER 8 GEEK FEST/ SCI-FI

Why can’t we? How far along is the science? What has to happen so I can have my own clone army or at least a bank of replacements under my garage? There is real science, and real scientists are pushing the envelope…

See you at the Orange County Convention Center!
